Mathematics Program

At Thomastown Meadows Primary School, we are passionate about developing confident, capable and numerate learners who can apply mathematical knowledge and thinking in everyday life. Our Mathematics program fosters a growth mindset, encouraging students to persevere, embrace challenges and recognise that everyone can develop their mathematical skills.

Our program develops students’ mathematical understanding, fluency, problem-solving and reasoning skills. Students learn to apply mathematical knowledge, make connections, explain their thinking and confidently solve problems in a range of contexts.

Students build strong number sense while exploring the key areas of mathematics, including Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space and Statistics, as outlined in the Victorian Curriculum 2.0.

Teaching and Learning

Our teachers use the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 to guide planning and instruction, drawing on Victorian lesson plans and resources available through the Arc platform to support explicit, structured and engaging mathematics lessons.

Learning experiences are carefully planned to meet the diverse needs of our students. Teachers differentiate instruction, provide appropriate adjustments and target learning to support each student’s individual needs. Through ongoing assessment and observation, teachers identify students’ strengths, monitor progress and plan next steps to address learning needs and extend understanding.

We believe every student can learn and thrive in mathematics. By providing purposeful learning opportunities in a supportive environment, we aim to develop independent learners who feel confident to take risks, persevere with challenges and celebrate their achievements.

Our Weekly Mathematics Program

Students participate in five hours of Mathematics each week, providing regular opportunities to develop, practise and apply mathematical knowledge and skills across a range of learning experiences.
