Mental Health & Wellbeing Leader

At Thomastown Meadows Primary School, we are committed to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of every student. As part of the Victorian Government’s Mental Health in Primary Schools initiative, we recognise that positive wellbeing is essential for students to feel safe, connected and ready to learn.

Our school is proud to have a dedicated Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader who works closely with students, staff, families and external agencies to promote positive mental health across the school community.

The Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader supports students by:

  • Providing early intervention and wellbeing support

  • Assisting students to develop social and emotional skills

  • Supporting students experiencing challenges with friendships, emotions, behaviour or engagement

  • Working collaboratively with teachers to create inclusive and supportive learning environments

  • Connecting families with appropriate services and supports when needed

  • Leading whole-school wellbeing initiatives and programs

At Thomastown Meadows Primary School, we believe that every child deserves to feel valued, supported and empowered to thrive both academically and personally. Through a strong focus on wellbeing, we continue to build a positive school culture where all students can flourish.

Supporting Wellbeing Through Trauma-Informed Practice – Berry Street

As part of our mental health initiative, we are embedding the Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) to support a trauma-informed approach across our school.

This model recognises the impact of stress and trauma on student wellbeing and learning, guiding staff to create safe, predictable, and supportive environments. It is built around five key domains: Body, Relationship, Stamina, Engagement, and Character.

A key feature of our approach is Morning Circle, where students begin the day with structured check-ins that build connection, promote emotional regulation, and set a positive tone for learning. Alongside consistent routines and self-regulation strategies, this supports students to feel calm, connected, and ready to learn, fostering a culture where wellbeing and learning go hand in hand.
