Health/Physical Education

At Thomastown Meadows we believe a healthy, physically active lifestyle is conducive to more effective participation in all that society has to offer. It supports greater levels of success within and beyond school.  This requires students to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours that enable them to:

  • Maintain good health and live a healthy lifestyle.
  • Understand the role of physical activity in ensuring good health.
  • Engage in physical activity.

The two main areas taught in Health and Physical Education are:

1. Personal, Social and Community Health – This is provided to students through structured lessons by classroom teachers and can include various incursions and excursions throughout the year.

2. Movement and Physical Activity – This is provided to students by a full time, dedicated Physical Education teacher and includes the following:

  • Practising, performing and refining fundamental movement skills to assist with body awareness, game skills and strategies as well as understanding the categories of the various games and sports played throughout the world.
  • Designing, creating and performing their own movement sequences and games.
  • Discussing and exploring the body’s reaction to physical activity and how it keeps us healthy and well.
  • Learning how to cooperate, participate positively and include others during physical activity and encourage others to do so.
  • Using trial and error and applying critical and creative thinking to test solutions to movement challenges.
  • Following rules, applying scoring systems and displaying ethical behaviour and fair play when participating in physical activities.
